About us

Our Mission

Speech and debate should never be limited by zip code or lack of school funding.

At Voices First, we believe that speech and debate should never be limited by zip code or lack of school funding. Our mission is to bring powerful, transformative communication experiences to middle school students across Massachusetts, especially in communities where these programs don't yet exist.

Founded by two high school students who saw first hand how debate helped them grow into confident, thoughtful, and engaged individuals, Voices First was created to pay it forward. Our intention is to build a space where middle schoolers discover the power of their voices early on. We hope to teach students how to think critically, listen deeply, speak with clarity, and lead with purpose.

We do this by training and supporting high school students to become chapter leaders, equipping them with the tools necessary to start debate teams at local schools, and providing them everything needed to succeed, from lesson plans to mentorship. Our network is student-run, peer-supported, and community-focused, because we believe the best way to change the world is to empower future generations to lead it.

Whether a student is shy, outspoken, curious, or still figuring it all out, there's a place for them at the debate table. And we're here to make sure that table keeps growing…

How it started

Our Story

Voices First began with a simple idea: if debate could change lives in our community, why shouldn't every student have the same chance?

After founding a middle school debate team at Walpole, we saw just how powerful it was to watch students grow into confident, articulate, and passionate advocates. We realized that what we built at one school could be the start of something bigger.

Debate taught us to think critically, speak boldly, and understand perspectives different from our own. It helped us find our voices, something we will carry for our entire life. And yet, we knew that in many schools across Massachusetts, programs like these didn't exist. Not because students weren't capable, but because no one had initiated them.

And Voices First was born: a student-led nonprofit committed to bringing speech and debate to middle schools & high schools across the country. We believe that when young people are given the tools to express themselves, they become more than just competitors; they become leaders, problem-solvers, and change-makers.

We're building a network where older students mentor younger ones, where chapters pop up in every town, and where every voice is heard, loud and clear. This is just the beginning. And we're putting Voices First.

In fall of 2025, Ramu Muthukaruppan and Tanay Singh started the Walpole Middle School Debate club. The club meets on Wednesdays after school and has 30+ students. The kids are learning Big Questions and Lincoln-Douglas styles of debate.

On January 24th, Walpole Middle School held its very first in-house debate tournament, providing students a real tournament experience with 3 rounds, judging and feedback from Walpole High School students, and the top 5 teams were awarded trophies.
